Rick Hawkins
Rick
Hawkins has been drumming for over 30 years. He started in school bands,
where he learned to read music, going from elementary school through college.
At Augusta College (Augusta State University) he played in the concert
and pep bands and learned to appreciate jazz music by playing in the big
band. He then participated in the unavoidable rock band era playing in
Bystander and assorted other groups. Since those days he has considered
drumming a hobby as he plays free- lance around town for most of the year
and plays in a German Oktoberfest band, The Channelheimer Oompah Band,
in the fall. He also plays percussion in the Augusta Concert Band for
most of the year.
Rick believes that learning to read is an essential part
of being a well rounded drummer. Each student learns to read music as
he or she develops playing skills. As the student's skills improve so
will his or her reading skills. Reading helps the drummer focus on the
part he or she is playing, learn new skills from books and other materials,
and write his or her own parts down on paper for song-writing purposes.
Rick's "real job" is a pediatric occupational
therapist. This profession involves teaching children with disabilities
to perform vital skills to improve their life. It requires empathy, insight,
and patience. All of these qualities are valuable for teaching music lessons.
